Senator Fetterman Condemns Democratic Party’s Shift Toward ‘Anti-American’ Ideology

In an interview on the “Reason Interview” podcast, U.S. Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) stated his personal political views have remained largely unchanged over the years, but he has observed a significant shift in the Democratic Party toward more radical and “anti-American” policies.

Fetterman noted that during his active involvement in progressive politics around 2016, the movement focused primarily on economic issues such as raising the minimum wage. However, he said the party has since evolved into supporting nations like Cuba, Venezuela, and the Iranian regime — a change he describes as increasingly “anti-American.”

“The way it’s turned out is much more standing with like Cuba, standing with Venezuela, standing with the Iranian regime,” Fetterman explained. “And for me, that’s become much more increasingly anti-American.”

Fetterman, who has recently clashed with fellow Democrats on issues including Israel, border security, and government spending, also reflected on the Democratic Party’s loss in the 2024 presidential election when Vice President Kamala Harris was defeated by President Donald Trump.

“I was campaigning for Kamala Harris there as a Democrat,” Fetterman said. “It was very clear we were going to lose.”

He argued that positions Democrats embraced during and after the 2020 election cycle contributed to Trump’s political resurgence. “A lot of the excesses that we’ve had in 2020 came back to revisit,” he added. “The excess of the party back then summoned the second term of the Trump administration.”

Fetterman, who has repeatedly rejected speculation about switching parties while maintaining his identity as a Democrat, said his growing distance from the progressive wing stems from the party’s ideological shift.

“This isn’t about my views changing,” Fetterman stated. “What’s really changed is the party.”

The senator emphasized he would make a “terrible Republican” due to his support for organized labor, abortion rights, and social welfare programs.
