Rep. Ashley Hinson won the Republican primary for Iowa’s open U.S. Senate seat on Tuesday night, securing her party’s nomination after earning several high-profile endorsements, including one from President Donald Trump.
With approximately 23% of the vote counted, Hinson captured 74.4% to former state Sen. Jim Carlin’s 25.6%.
The incumbent will face Democrat state Rep. Josh Turek in November’s general election. Turek, a four-time wheelchair basketball Paralympian, secured 63.4% of the vote in the Democratic primary after roughly 36% were counted.
Hinson is serving her third term representing Iowa’s second congressional district, which covers much of northeastern Iowa. Her endorsements include President Donald Trump and Sen. Joni Ernst, who has held the seat since 2015 and declined to seek a third term. Gov. Kim Reynolds, Attorney General Brenna Bird, Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, and Secretary of State Paul Pate also endorsed her.
