Democrats’ Funding Hostage Taked Leaves Airports in Disarray

Democrats seeking to defund Immigration and Customs Enforcement have been thwarted in their attempt to leverage political pressure to weaken the agency. The group aims to hold the Transportation Security Administration’s funding hostage until their demands for reducing ICE’s authority are satisfied, placing millions of air travelers under extended security line wait times that stretch into hours.

According to CNN, “Half of the nation’s busiest airports reported more than a third of TSA agents calling out sick on Saturday.” At LaGuardia Airport, passengers faced up to three hours in line on Sunday — an issue not caused by an Air Canada incident later that evening but due to understaffing throughout the day.

President Donald Trump addressed the crisis by deploying ICE personnel to over a dozen major airports to supplement TSA’s reduced workforce. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned the move on CNN’s “State of the Union,” stating: “The last thing the American people need is for untrained ICE agents to be deployed at airports across the country, potentially to brutalize or kill them.”

The situation highlights risks posed by illegal alien criminals. If Democrats succeed in weakening ICE, more Americans could face harm — including Sheridan Gorman, an 18-year-old Loyola University student murdered by a Venezuelan national who entered the country illegally. The man charged with her death had broken U.S. law simply by being present, yet the enforcement necessary to prevent such individuals from entering or swiftly deporting them is what Democrats aim to dismantle.

Illegal alien criminals, not immigration officers, threaten public safety, but Jeffries and his colleagues have chosen to vilify ICE. They remain aligned with a left-wing activist base advocating for open borders, an agenda exposed by the immigration crisis following the previous Democratic administration. Voters rejected this approach, yet Trump’s election on a platform of robust immigration enforcement has not deterred Jeffries or Senate counterpart Chuck Schumer from their goals. They seek to return the country to conditions similar to those during the Biden administration, when individuals like Gorman’s killer could enter without scrutiny.

Unexpectedly, Democrats’ actions have been countered by Trump’s strategy. By deploying ICE personnel, he addressed TSA staffing gaps while strengthening immigration enforcement. ICE now serves a dual role: enforcing immigration law and providing temporary security support for airports during the standoff.

The only potential risk to travelers is that activist groups might exploit the situation to create conflict against ICE — tactics previously used in Minneapolis with deadly consequences. However, the country cannot succumb to intimidation if innocent lives are to be protected. Jeffries and Schumer operate under a playbook of generating tension and frustration before channeling public anger toward law enforcement.

While ICE agents do not fully replace trained TSA personnel for airport security, they can handle basic safety requirements. Meanwhile, TSA employees — who remain unpaid during the standoff — manage specialized tasks. ICE’s separate funding from Homeland Security and TSA prevents Democrats from directly targeting immigration enforcement, while the agency’s ability to hire quickly means Trump could rapidly integrate TSA staff into ICE if necessary.

The president has contingency plans for potential disruptions, including deploying the National Guard to airports. Law enforcement agencies have long been misrepresented in liberal media, but vilifying the military remains far more challenging than similar efforts. Congressional Democrats view airports as strategic points for gaining leverage over the nation.
