Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights at the Justice Department, stated in an interview on Tuesday that voter fraud occurs regardless of how much Democrats deny it.
Dhillon dismissed claims by Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey that the SAVE America Act would disenfranchise millions of Americans, particularly women who would struggle to obtain identification and be eligible to vote.
“This is not really a problem for any American,” Dhillon said. “Every American can go and get an ID. It’s really not difficult.”
Dhillon noted that states requiring voter identification have made it free for people to obtain IDs at the state level. She described concerns about the SAVE America Act as “a red herring” and “just kind of fake scaremongering.”
The Justice Department has identified numerous instances of illegal voting through its investigations, Dhillon stated. She reported that with the cooperation of states, they have cleansed 55 to 60 million voter records so far but referred tens of thousands of potential illegal aliens to federal officials for further investigation.
Dhillon explained that during each case, they interview individuals to check for common names or other identifiers to avoid targeting the wrong person. However, she indicated that after completing such checks, a significant number of voters are found to be illegally registered and have voted.
She added that Democrats consistently claim such fraud never happens, but it does occur.
Dhillon also praised Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco for seizing half a million ballots from last November’s vote on redrawing California’s congressional maps. She called it “very refreshing” to see local law enforcement taking action on these issues.
“I look forward to seeing what the sheriff and lawyers there find out,” Dhillon said.
She emphasized that having high confidence in election outcomes requires asking questions: “It is important that we have high confidence of all citizens in the outcome of our elections. And how can you have that when we’re not allowed to ask questions?”
