Maryland Gov. Wes Moore Defies Trump-Backed Redistricting Moves Amid National Debate

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday that his state is not “going to sit on our hands” amid the nationwide redistricting fight. The Democrat said, “If other states are going to go through this process… we’re not just going to sit on our hands because Donald Trump tells us to. That’s not the way this process is going to work.”

Moore’s stance comes as California voters passed a proposition granting the state Legislature authority over congressional maps until 2030, according to The Hill. This followed Republicans in the Texas Legislature, with the backing of President Donald Trump, redrawing its congressional maps months ago. Republicans in Missouri and North Carolina also followed Texas’ lead, while Ohio reached a compromise on a map that could favor the GOP in two districts next November.

Moore stated, “The reason I ordered the Governor’s Redistricting Advisory Commission is because I want to make sure we can have a bipartisan group look at the maps in Maryland.” He added, “This happens every decade. If other states are going through this journey of identifying fair maps in a mid-decade cycle, so should Maryland. I’m not sure why we should be playing by different rules than Texas or Florida or Ohio.”

When asked if his plan could backfire—given only one of Maryland’s eight districts is Republican—Moore responded, “I think fighting for democracy is never risky.” He reiterated, “Our job as leaders is to protect the democratic process. My role is to ensure the commission does its work, not to draw maps myself. It’s the legislature’s responsibility to vote on them.”
