Former Department of Government Efficiency official Jeremy Lewin, who was scheduled to begin Monday as deputy assistant to the president and senior director for Western Hemisphere affairs at the White House National Security Council, has been dropped from the position after conservative activist Laura Loomer raised concerns about his past associations with liberal constitutional scholar Laurence Tribe.
In a post on X Monday, Loomer cited a Boston Globe report stating that Lewin assisted in drafting an amicus brief supporting transgender rights and had sent a text message to classmates celebrating Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
Loomer stated that she had heard about Lewin’s interest in White House positions approximately a month ago, noting that “there were rumblings that he was trying to get a White House position, and so I already had all of my oppo ready to go.”
After leaving the Department of Government Efficiency, where he helped dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development, Lewin moved to the State Department. He currently serves as undersecretary of state for foreign assistance, humanitarian affairs, and religious freedom.
A State Department official contacted Loomer to urge her to stop targeting Lewin, arguing that he had made significant contributions at the department. However, she maintained that the outreach did not alter her position.
Mike Needham, deputy national security adviser, stated: “Jeremy has been a tremendous fighter for the President’s agenda. His efforts have transformed a corrupt foreign aid regime that funneled taxpayer dollars to activist liberal NGO’s into a well-run system that advances America First objectives.”
