U.S. Strike on Iranian Munitions Depot Could Signal Turning Point in Conflict

Retired Air Force Brigadier General Blaine Holt stated on Tuesday that a U.S. strike on an Iranian ammunition depot in Isfahan using 2,000-pound bunker-buster bombs could mark a turning point in the conflict as negotiations continue.

Holt described the broader situation as favorable for the United States, citing President Donald Trump’s confidence about the war’s trajectory. “If they come to the table, that’ll be good. But it doesn’t matter whether they come or not, we’ve set them back,” Trump said earlier at an executive order signing in the Oval Office.

“When the president is confident about the endgame, then you can know that he’s not just whistling Dixie. He means it,” Holt added.

The general cautioned against placing excessive weight on Iranian public statements, arguing they are largely aimed at a domestic audience. “They’re only trying to convince 90 million people that they’re still in control,” he said.

Holt highlighted the complex geopolitical landscape surrounding the conflict, noting several European nations have distanced themselves from U.S. and Israeli military operations while urging restraint and adherence to international law—declining direct involvement. He also noted occasional differences between the United States and Israel regarding timing and next steps, underscoring that military operations and diplomatic efforts remain fluid.

Holt confirmed indirect negotiations continue, citing Pakistan and Turkey as confirming participants, with Saudi Arabia and Egypt also facilitating backchannel communications. “There is a negotiation that’s going on. That much is very true,” he stated.

The general emphasized reopening the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical priority amid the war. “Opening the straits is really a dire situation. We’ve got to do that next. So whatever’s on that plate, let’s get it done,” he said.

Regarding the Isfahan strike, Holt indicated it targeted a major munitions plant and occurred the previous night, with reports confirming the operation.
