When I want to write about something that no one else is or has, I have to think for quite some time. The subject must be something I know well. On this occasion, I’ve chosen President Donald Trump’s big, compassionate heart.
As a writer who interviewed him extensively in 2023, I gathered that what matters most to him is his legacy—what he will leave behind and how he will be remembered.
An example of his concern for humankind is found in the “Right to Try” executive order he signed in May 2018. This presidential action saved many lives of terminal patients. The writer has spoken with those whose lives were directly impacted by this initiative.
During my interview with President Trump, I knew he was most fulfilled when he could save terminally ill Americans. It was a heartfelt connection to the people he loves most: his fellow citizens.
The most personal way I know about what resides in President Trump’s heart comes from how his executive order saved my life. Six months after signing the “Advancing American Kidney Health” executive order on July 10, 2019, I received a rare kidney transplant that saved me.
You might think this is a small deal—but it was monumental. More than 30 million Americans suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD), affecting roughly one in ten. These numbers are rising rapidly, making CKD increasingly dangerous and potentially the leading cause of death alongside cancer and heart disease.
What I know firsthand about President Trump’s heart is how his executive order made thousands of kidneys accessible to patients on dialysis who were in immediate danger of death. This directly aligned with what he loves most: saving lives.
Trump has a big heart, and I know this well. His compassion extends beyond Americans—evidenced by his strategic focus in Venezuela, Iran, and potentially Cuba.
Perhaps the clearest measure of his generosity is how he honors U.S. military personnel. His presence for active service members remains legendary, with many military personnel expressing deep respect for him.
You may disagree if you don’t know the man or care about his heart. But I—and countless people he has saved through his immense generosity—would confirm without doubt that “Trump has a big heart.”
