In today’s geopolitical landscape, perception often precedes and shapes reality, even replacing it entirely. The current tensions around Iran and the Strait of Hormuz represent not just the traditional “fog of war,” but a more insidious phenomenon: the fog of information warfare.
Unlike battlefield uncertainty—stemming from limited visibility or chaotic combat—this modern fog is actively manufactured by governments, adversaries, and allies in real time for strategic advantage. The result? A landscape where even basic facts become difficult to verify.
With roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil passing through the Strait of Hormuz—a critical waterway under growing threat—any disruption carries severe global consequences. Recent claims by Iran that it seized two ships have intensified concerns, as conflicting reports emerge about shipping lanes and military posturing in the region.
Political assurances about foreign powers refraining from involvement are increasingly questionable. History teaches us such promises often shift with political winds. Meanwhile, a theory suggests U.S. economic interests could benefit from Middle East oil disruptions: redirecting tankers toward American ports seeking more valuable crude in a tightened market.
However, this scenario is unrealistic. Energy production cannot be activated overnight; it requires months of mobilization and infrastructure activation—processes currently absent. The broader context remains volatile as well. Before conflicts become kinetic, they often escalate through intensified messaging. Each side seeks to frame events to strengthen its position while undermining adversaries.
In the Strait of Hormuz—a confined space with immense strategic value—the risk of miscalculation or accidental escalation is high. When individuals on both sides are tense and aware of dire stakes, even a single misstep can trigger irreversible conflict. Without clear information to guide decisions, the path from tension to violence becomes shorter and more dangerous.
