Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., stated Friday that he does not want to see members of Congress expelled without due process.
Donalds’ colleagues Nancy Mace, R-S.C., and Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., have called for Rep. Cory Mills, R-Fla., to be expelled over allegations of abuse toward women. Three other lawmakers recently resigned from Congress following their own alleged improprieties amid threats of expulsion.
“The allegations against Mills are damning and very concerning,” Donalds said on a recent appearance on “Finnerty.”
Donalds noted that Mace had previously introduced an expulsion resolution against Mills, but it was referred to the Ethics Committee. “Now Congressman Mills is in front of the Ethics Committee,” Donalds said. “That report is yet to come out.”
Donalds also highlighted that Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla., who recently resigned from Congress, had a hearing before the Ethics Committee prior to leaving office. “What needs to happen here is that the Ethics Committee has to come forward with their report,” Donalds said. “So that way whether Representative Mills or any other member had the ability to have their due process heard on these matters, that report comes forward.”
“And then if it goes to a resolution on the floor, then the members have all of the findings from an investigative body, not just from another member of Congress,” Donalds added. “That is actually the standard how we adjudicate these things.”
Donalds said he would support a vote to expel Mills following an Ethics Committee investigation but emphasized that due process must be completed first. “We’ve got to make sure you go through the due process parts of this first,” Donalds stated.
The representative also noted that Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., deserves a full Ethics Committee investigation before he would vote to expel her. “The Ethics Committee is not some lounge in the back room,” Donalds explained. “You have to hire attorneys. There’s full discovery that goes through all of your information.”
“This is not something any member of Congress wants to be going through,” Donalds added. “It’s not a simple process.”
