Trump Targets Meatpacking Giants in Bid to Lower Prices

President Donald Trump’s decision to direct the Department of Justice to investigate major meatpacking companies highlights his focus on addressing rising costs for American consumers, political strategist Dick Morris told Newsmax.

Morris noted that many voters, including those with high incomes, feel financially strained despite their earnings, citing unaffordable rent, education, and other expenses. He emphasized that Trump’s move aims to challenge corporate monopolies driving up food prices.

“The meatpackers, not the workers, have pushed meat beyond the reach of average consumers,” Morris said. He pointed out that four firms dominate beef production, with two controlling pork, one of which is Chinese-owned.

Beef prices reached record highs in 2025 due to droughts and reduced cattle production, yet demand remained strong. Industry consolidation has worsened the situation, with Tyson Foods, Cargill, JBS Foods, and National Beef Packing Co. controlling 80% of the market.

Morris argued that breaking these monopolies would restore competition and lower prices. He criticized leaders relying on inflation statistics, stating affordability is a pressing concern for voters. Drawing parallels to George H.W. Bush’s 1988 defeat, Morris warned Republicans to address economic realities facing constituents.

“We need the president to make the Republican Party understand that affordability is a real issue,” he said, referencing New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s support among frustrated voters.
