Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Pa., expressed concern that the Democrats’ inability to agree on a continuing resolution could “ruin Thanksgiving” for Americans affected by the ongoing federal government shutdown. The Senate failed to pass a bill to pay unpaid federal employees during the shutdown, as Democrats opposed GOP efforts to fund parts of the government without major concessions.
McCormick highlighted the 38-day shutdown, now the longest in U.S. history, which has impacted more than just unpaid federal workers. Data from Cirium showed over 1,700 flights canceled between Friday and Sunday, with airlines reducing domestic flights by 4% at 40 major airports following FAA mandates. He noted that Pennsylvanians and Americans are feeling the effects, as government workers take loans to manage expenses.
McCormick also pointed to paused SNAP benefits for nearly two million Pennsylvanians, stating, “The pain is becoming clear.” He emphasized that Republicans have voted 14 times to reopen the government, despite political divisions.
