Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino Launch ‘Romy and Michele 2’ Filming After Decades

Production has officially begun on “Romy and Michele 2,” the long-awaited sequel to the 1997 cult comedy that became a beloved classic in its time. Original stars Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino have returned to film together for this new project, marking their first reunion since the original movie.

The Los Angeles-based production, which will debut exclusively on Hulu, follows characters who were once Los Angeles roommates who created fake corporate successes to impress former classmates at a high school reunion in Arizona. This sequel brings back screenwriter Robin Schiff and director Tim Federle, who worked on the original film.

20th Century Studios confirmed filming started by sharing an Instagram post featuring Kudrow and Sorvino seated in director-style chairs with the title “Romy and Michele 2” inscribed.

Sorvino revealed during a November 2024 interview that nearly every character from the original film is returning, stating: “Almost every single character from the original that was important is coming back. They’re all pending, them making deals, them saying yes—but they’re all in there.”

The project has drawn significant attention due to its enduring popularity. Sorvino shared her thoughts about the film’s impact during a recent podcast discussion, noting that she and Schiff recently received a “five-minute standing ovation” at a fan screening. “I’m continuously amazed at how much this movie has meant to people in their lives,” she said.

With no official release date set, the sequel has expanded its cast with multiple new actors, including Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham.

The filming process follows months of careful scheduling for both leads. Sorvino recently completed work on “Fog of War” and “Signing Tony Raymond,” and made her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in “Chicago.” Kudrow is currently starring in the third season of HBO’s comedy series “The Comeback.”

The momentum for the film reached a peak during a May 11 appearance on “Watch What Happens Live!” where Kudrow confirmed: “Things are kind of moving toward” the cameras finally rolling.
