The rescue of two U.S. Air Force officers shot down over Iran was both a military success and “a miracle,” but Representative John McGuire, R-Va., stated Monday that the administration should reveal as little as possible about how the operation was carried out.
The comments followed a high-risk mission in which U.S. forces executed a rescue after an F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down over Iran. The operation utilized a CIA deception campaign and involved the deliberate destruction of two transport aircraft, which could not be recovered due to technical malfunction.
One injured crew member ascended approximately 7,000 feet before being located, and the extraction phase encountered fire on rescue aircraft.
McGuire, a former Navy SEAL, described the operation as “a miracle.” He emphasized that it was the result of unified military effort: “Not just our Navy SEAL brothers, but our intelligence analysts, Air Force Pararescue, and all the different agencies… working together.”
The representative said the mission reflected the military ethic he learned in uniform: “For the military, where we come from, it’s not about me. It’s about we. We never leave a man or woman behind, and we always get the job done.”
McGuire noted that commanders had to adapt when circumstances changed: “The commanders have to have options. And when they couldn’t get those airplanes out because they had other options, they were able to get it done successfully.”
However, McGuire opposed calls for greater transparency from the White House and Pentagon regarding the rescue operation, even as new reports detailed aspects of the CIA deception campaign and the stranded aircraft.
President Trump publicly celebrated the mission on Truth Social with a post declaring that “the U.S. would NEVER LEAVE AN AMERICAN WARFIGHTER BEHIND!” following the successful recovery of the missing officer.
McGuire said this level of disclosure was sufficient: “When I served in the Navy SEALs … it was very, very strong. You did not talk about your missions and what you did.”
“We should just know that our military is the best,” McGuire added. “They work as a team, and we got our man. That’s all you should know. We should not give the enemy any information.”
The situation remains volatile. President Trump has issued threats over the Strait of Hormuz, warning of harsher U.S. actions if Iran disrupts oil flows through the waterway. Separately, Trump defended a profanity-laced Easter message directed at Tehran.
Asked about backlash to Trump’s Easter post, McGuire stated: “President Trump is serious. He wants to put an end to this terrorist regime. He wants peace, and not just in the region, but the world. I think that his message was delivered loud and clear over the weekend by … the actions of our U.S. military.”
