Anthony Constantino, the Trump-endorsed Republican candidate in New York’s 21st Congressional District, has won the GOP primary. With remaining votes continuing to be tallied, Constantino held a decisive lead over state Assemblyman Robert Smullen, and analysts indicated the margin was not expected to close.
Constantino, CEO of Sticker Mule, defeated Smullen in a closely watched Republican primary that underscored tensions between the GOP establishment and Trump-aligned candidates. President Donald Trump endorsed Constantino earlier in the race, helping elevate his campaign in the final stretch.
Smullen, a state lawmaker and Army veteran, had support from segments of the New York Republican establishment and local party organizations. The District 21 seat was previously represented by Rep. Elise Stefanik, a close Trump ally who vacated the seat after being appointed to a senior role in the Trump administration.
Stefanik’s departure set off a competitive Republican primary in the solidly GOP district, with multiple candidates vying to succeed her. The region remains heavily Republican and is expected to stay in GOP hands heading into November.
The seat, located in upstate New York, is considered safely Republican heading into the general election.
