Dick Morris has expressed skepticism about reports of an imminent U.S.-Iran agreement, warning that “we’ve heard for so many months and years now that Iran is close to a deal.”
Speaking after reports that U.S. and Iranian officials may be nearing a memorandum of understanding to end the conflict, Morris stated that “the deal is imminent, but a deal could be had.”
“I think the problem is that then we go from wanting a deal to wanting to see why it’s broken and wanting to enforce it, so pinning Iran down is very difficult and may take more than 48 hours,” he added.
The comments followed recent remarks from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who said the “Iran situation will be resolved one way or the other very soon.”
When asked about the political impact of the conflict on President Donald Trump, Morris rejected media claims that the president’s standing has weakened.
“Trump’s poll numbers have been very good,” Morris said.
“The media [is] saying they’re bad. Everybody’s saying, ‘How low can he fall?’” He pointed to a recent John McLaughlin poll showing Trump’s approval at “48%, which is where it’s been.”
“For him to have gone through all of this war and the gas prices and all that without losing a point is pretty damn good,” Morris added.
Morris also predicted that if diplomacy fails, President Trump would take military action against Iran.
“I think that Trump is going to bomb the hell out of Iran if he doesn’t get a deal,” he said. “I think his patience is exhausted, as it ought to be.”
He further noted that resolving the Iran situation would allow Trump to shift focus elsewhere, stating: “The important thing for Trump politically is to move on to Cuba, because he can’t both deal with Cuba and Iran at the same time.”
