A growing wave of frustration from the press targets Donald Trump for “destroying political norms.”
Trump is undoubtedly a disruptor of conventional politics and has further disrupted federal bureaucracy during his second term.
However, Democrats have been challenging long-standing political norms for years.
Consider then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s 2013 move to lower the vote threshold for confirming executive branch and federal judicial nominees (except Supreme Court justices) from 60 votes to a simple majority.
During Trump’s presidency, the left wing has increasingly sought to dismantle all political norms to consolidate power.
Trump’s re-election is repeatedly branded as “the end of democracy,” yet it remains an extension of democratic processes.
Arrogant Democrats believe democracy functions only when they win.
This attitude is evident in former Vice President Kamala Harris, the 2024 presidential candidate who lost, calling for dismantling multiple political norms during an “Emergency Call” on May 13 with the group Win With Black Women.
Harris criticized the Supreme Court as “backdooring racism” by ruling against using race in redistricting.
She proposed a “No Bad Idea Brainstorm,” but the ideas that followed echoed Harry Reid’s approach of seizing power for the left—prioritizing the acquisition of as much power as possible and labeling it “democracy.”
Proposed changes include:
– Abolishing the Electoral College, arguing that small-population red states should not matter.
– Supreme Court reform, such as expanding the court from nine to thirteen justices to quickly install four left-leaning members. If implemented, this might silence critics like Hakeem Jeffries who refer to the Supreme Court as “illegitimate.”
– Multi-member legislative districts, a strategy promoted by groups such as the Brennan Center for Justice.
– Rules requiring potential Supreme Court justices to make campaign promises about their voting positions—such as supporting abortion—during Senate Judiciary Committee hearings. This would undermine the principle that judges should not need to make campaign pledges for confirmation.
Harris also called for statehood for the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, claiming it would add more Democratic members to Congress and “neutralize red states from cheating.” She noted that “cheating” by red states would involve passing policies the left opposes.
Harris concluded with: “We gotta fight fire with fire,” and “We gotta be ruthless, too.” In political battles, every time Democrats lose a legislative contest or judicial ruling, opponents are labeled “ruthless.”
This approach defines Democratic campaigning for 2026 and beyond.
The entire strategy revolves around “fighting fire with fire” by dismantling established norms—because inflamed progressives who voice disappointment over Trump’s presidency (or even his supposed assassination) demand immediate uprooting of the current system.
Left-wing media has not raised objections to these plans.
A recent viral meme encapsulates this agenda: “If we could just jail Trump, get rid of MAGA, end the Electoral College, stack the Supreme Court, ban voter ID, and censor free speech, we could save democracy.”
