House Oversight Committee Chair Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., stated on Tuesday that missing nuclear scientists represent a significant national security threat.
The FBI is leading an investigation into at least 10 cases involving individuals tied to high-level research centers, including NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory.
In a statement released this week, Comer said the House Oversight Committee has been requesting information from agencies such as NASA, the Department of War, the Department of Energy, and the FBI for the past three years to determine if there are connections among these cases.
“America has a superior nuclear program,” Comer added. “There are many countries, and you can name the usual suspects—China, North Korea, Russia, Iran—who would give anything to have our intellectual property with respect to our nuclear program.”
Comer described 10 individuals who are either missing or have died unexplained as being in crucial roles within the nation’s nuclear program. “It’s a concern,” he said. “The odds of this happening by coincidence are astronomical. So we take an interest in this.”
When asked about the possibility of coincidence, Comer dismissed it: “I don’t think any American who has kept up with this story over the last two weeks would consider it a coincidence that 10 people involved in our nuclear program have either died unexplained or gone missing.”
“That’s almost hard to believe,” Comer said. “I don’t believe the government has thoroughly investigated this matter.”
He also noted that the government sometimes hides information to avoid panic: “We don’t have a lot of confidence in some of these government agencies. So we’re going to do everything we can to get answers for the American people and determine whether or not this is a national security threat.”
