HBO has enhanced security protocols for its upcoming “Harry Potter” television series following death threats directed at cast member Paapa Essiedu.

Network CEO Casey Bloys confirmed the production operates with what he described as a “serious security team,” noting that high-profile shows often attract intense reactions from passionate fans.

“With all actors on any kind of big IP shows — and this is obviously one of those where you’ve got passionate fans, people with a lot of opinions — it can get scary in places,” Bloys told Variety.

He emphasized the network had anticipated such challenges, including training cast members to manage online abuse. “So for any show like that, we anticipated it and tried to have training, best practices in terms of social media and how to deal with it,” Bloys said. “And obviously we’ve got a serious security team.”

The heightened security follows reports that Essiedu received repeated death threats on social media. “I’ve been told, ‘Quit, or I’ll murder you,'” he stated.

Essiedu described seeing threatening messages regularly across platforms like Instagram: “The reality is that if I look at Instagram I will see somebody saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you.'” He added, “While I hope I’ll be OK, nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job.”

Essiedu, who portrays Severus Snape in the series, is part of the core adult cast announced in April. The project, set to span multiple years, requires long-term commitment from its actors. He will take on a role previously played by Alan Rickman in J.K. Rowling’s film adaptations.

The actor acknowledged the emotional toll of abuse but expressed resilience: “Many people put their lives on the line in their work. I’m playing a wizard in Harry Potter. And I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t affect me emotionally.”

Despite challenges, Essiedu noted the abuse fuels his dedication: “The abuse fuels me… and makes me more passionate about making this character my own, because I think of how I felt as a kid. I would imagine myself at Hogwarts on broomsticks, and the idea that a kid like me can see themselves represented in that world? That’s motivation to not be intimidated by someone saying they’d rather I died instead of doing work I’m going to be really proud of.”

Essiedu also shared his personal timeline: “I’ll be 45 by the time I finish, and I know my life is going to change in a big way. But I have to just surrender to that.”
