A routine social media message transformed into an unexpected wedding surprise when music superstars Ed Sheeran and Martin Garrix abruptly appeared at the Adler Planetarium to crash a local couple’s reception.
The artists’ sudden arrival, triggered by a direct message from the bride’s brother on social media, left guests and the newlyweds stunned during their weekend celebration. Though the performers were known to be in town that weekend, the family had not anticipated a response to their message.
In a post shared online, Sheeran described the exchange: “He’s got a DM from someone saying, ‘Can you crash my sister’s wedding?’ So, we’re going there.”
Upon entering the Adler Planetarium, the reception shifted into total disbelief. Wedding videographer Lawrence Trantham witnessed the chaotic reaction firsthand. “The bride was about to pass out,” he said. “Everyone was bouncing off the walls—some people were shell-shocked, mouths agape, eyes wide open.”
For the newlyweds Tessa Kindelin and Brendan Harty, the moment was entirely unexpected. “The crowd erupted,” Kindelin recalled. “I knew Mike had been talking to Martin Garrix, but I didn’t know Ed Sheeran was coming with him too.”
“So I came up from the crowd and heard their song playing,” she added. “Then I saw Ed—and I thought, ‘Oh my God!’ It was unbelievable.”
The surprise concert brought immense joy for the groom’s family, particularly his sisters who are devoted Ed Sheeran fans. Harty explained: “They’ve been going to concerts with him for over a decade—so they got the best of both worlds. Everyone was so elated.”
The artists performed for the crowd, creating an unforgettable memory for the couple. “I danced with my wife and Ed Sheeran sang perfectly,” Harty said. “It couldn’t get any better.”
Kindelin noted they had joked about inviting the musicians to their wedding. Reflecting on the experience later, she stated: “I’ve watched that video multiple times from different angles, and I still can’t believe it happened.”
Harty echoed her sentiment: “It was surreal—beyond anything we ever imagined.”
The couple is now preparing for their honeymoon in Hawaii. Kindelin credited the moment to social media’s power and the performers’ generosity, joking that her brother’s intervention has secured him lifelong gratitude—meaning he’s now exempt from giving her gifts for life.
“It’s above and beyond what anyone could expect,” she concluded. “People say the wedding is going to be the best day of your life—but this was just unreal.”
