Senator Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., has demanded “significant new leadership” within the Democratic Party, arguing that its traditional strategies have failed following electoral losses in the 2024 election.
Speaking on SiriusXM’s “Straight Shooter” podcast with host Stephen A. Smith, Slotkin described an ongoing internal debate about the party’s path forward. “Every day there’s a debate within the party about the path forward,” she said. “That’s why I believe we need significant new leadership. The old models are no longer working.”
Slotkin noted that Democrats were soundly defeated in 2024, while she won her swing state that year. She attributed the party’s losses to an overemphasis on multiple priorities: “Democrats tried to make everyone happy and answer every question.”
“When you prioritize everything,” Slotkin continued, “no one knows what you actually stand for.”
She contrasted this approach with President Donald Trump’s campaign strategy, which she said focused on a single issue: affordability. “He came in with one clear message,” she stated. “He said, ‘I’m going to make your life more affordable. I’m going to put more money in your pocket.’ He won because he kept his message simple and focused on the issues Americans cared most about.”
Slotkin did not identify specific leaders who should step aside but emphasized that incremental changes would be insufficient for addressing the party’s challenges. She noted that discussions over leadership, messaging, and strategy are occurring daily ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Her comments come as Democratic lawmakers, strategists and activists continue debating how to broaden the party’s appeal in coming contests.
