The University of Virginia’s “Sabato’s Crystal Ball” has upgraded Senator Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., reelection prospects from “Leans Democrat” to “Likely Democrat,” citing his fundraising dominance, consistent polling lead, and a political environment increasingly favorable to Democrats.
Ossoff, the only Democratic senator seeking re-election in a state carried by President Donald Trump in 2024, has raised more than $20 million during the second quarter of this year and currently holds approximately $42 million in cash on hand. In contrast, Republican Representative Mike Collins, R-Ga., who emerged from a primary runoff, raised just over $2 million and faces distractions following reports that his son-in-law promoted white nationalist and antisemitic content online.
The report cautioned that some surveys may overstate Ossoff’s lead but noted the race appears considerably less competitive than Michigan, the GOP’s other top Senate target. Recent Georgia elections have demonstrated Democrats can win statewide despite losing significant margins among white voters, as seen with Ossoff and Senator Raphael Warnock.
Additionally, the Crystal Ball adjusted its House ratings, indicating Democrats hold a five- to six-point lead on generic congressional ballots and are favored to capture the chamber. While Republicans retain plausible paths to maintaining their majority through favorable redistricting and candidate quality, the current political environment favors Democrats.
