Senator Ron Johnson has stated he expects minimal cooperation from Dr. Anthony Fauci during his upcoming testimony before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee this week as Republicans prepare to question the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director about the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Johnson described Fauci as “very forgetful, completely unrepentant, arrogant — I mean, arrogant to the extreme.”
The Wisconsin Republican indicated he intends to use Wednesday’s hearing to highlight what he views as a miserable failure in the government’s handling of the pandemic.
This follows committee Chairman Rand Paul subpoenaing Fauci for testimony regarding the origins of COVID-19 and U.S.-funded research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China. Paul has alleged that federal officials concealed information about U.S. funding for viral research at the institute, where he and other Republicans argue the virus may have originated.
U.S. intelligence agencies remain divided on whether the pandemic emerged from a laboratory incident or natural transmission. In a 2021 Senate hearing, Fauci denied that the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases funded gain-of-function research involving SARS-CoV-2 at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Paul has repeatedly accused Fauci of misleading Congress on research funding and argued for criminal charges against him. Recent reports indicate negotiations with Fauci over documents had dragged on for months before the committee issued a subpoena.
Fauci retired from government service in 2022 after advising seven presidents and received a preemptive pardon from former President Joe Biden prior to leaving office.
The hearing is expected to renew congressional scrutiny of pandemic response decisions, including funding, public health guidance, and investigations into the virus’s origins.
