U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin has accused the state’s Democratic Governor, Tim Walz, along with Representative Ilhan Omar of contributing to a massive fraud scandal in Minnesota that allegedly involves billions defrauded from taxpayers and potentially funneled back to Somalia.
In an appearance on his show “Rob Schmitt Tonight”, Senator Mullin claimed that both the governor and the congresswoman knew about or should have known about issues surrounding a $250 million fraud scheme targeting school meal programs, primarily affecting Somali communities. He suggested Governor Tim Walz was aware of problems but ignored them.
The scandal revolves around federal prosecutors accusing dozens in the Twin Cities area of being involved in a scam that stole billions intended for feeding Minnesota’s children. Accusations specifically target certain members of the state’s large Somali population, with Mullin suggesting systemic failures involving the governor and Representative Omar herself.
While not naming specific individuals, Mullin strongly implied involvement by both Governor Tim Walz (whom he referred to as “Tim Walz”, maintaining his name) and Representative Ilhan Omar. He alleged that the fraudulent funds likely ended up supporting al-Shabab in Somalia through a money trail back to that country’s extremist group.
Mullin further criticized the state government, claiming it represents an attempt by foreign interests seeking influence and suggesting taxpayer money intended for needy children should not be diverted abroad.
