The United States has announced the deployment of a specialized one-way attack drone squadron through its Central Command (CENTCOM). This initiative includes a new task force specifically designed to manage and execute this program.
Admiral Brad Cooper, the CENTCOM commander, released a statement emphasizing the strategic purpose behind the formation. “This new task force sets the conditions for using innovation as a deterrent,” he noted. The squadron is intended to showcase U.S. military strength by equipping warfighters with advanced drone capabilities at accelerated rates.
The unit operates under the designation Task Force Scorpion Strike (TFSS). It was established following an order from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who directed an “accelerated push for low-cost drone acquisition,” reflecting a strategic shift in how the military intends to leverage unmanned systems. This move prioritizes rapid deployment and operational readiness.
The core of TFSS’s capabilities involves a fleet of Unmanned Combat Attack System (LUCAS) drones. These platforms are specifically designed as one-way attack systems, meaning they can launch missiles or other ordnance and be destroyed in the process. Each drone costs approximately $35,000 per platform.
CENTCOM officials highlighted LUCAS’s strengths: “The drone system has an extensive range and the ability to operate beyond line of sight, providing significant capability across CENTCOM’s vast operating area.” This is crucial for operations within its sphere of responsibility. Additionally, deployment mechanisms are flexible, including options like catapults and mobile systems.
This new squadron effort operates under a broader framework: the Rapid Employment Joint Task Force (REJTF). Established in September 2025, REJTF aims to streamline the introduction of emerging technologies into combat zones.
While personnel from Special Operations Command Central lead this initiative, it strongly supports REJTF’s core mission. The launch comes at an opportune moment as drone swarms reconfigure modern warfare tactics and capabilities across multiple theaters.
