More than a year after the House approved the SAVE America Act, a coalition of 25 Republican lawmakers has pledged to oppose all Senate legislation until the voter identification measure reaches the floor for a vote.
Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-Florida) announced Tuesday that she and 24 other members have signed a letter committing to “vote NO on any Senate bills unless SAVE America is passed.” Luna stated that the Senate’s recent housing package—which will be sent to the House—will be blocked if the election law is not attached.
“The Senate cannot keep obstructing President Trump’s agenda while ignoring election integrity,” Luna wrote in an announcement. She urged colleagues to honor their pledge.
The effort has been supported by the office of outgoing Representative Chip Roy (R-Texas), which criticized the Senate for “repeated delays” on the bill. Roy’s team stated: “We don’t have the votes. Noncitizen voting isn’t an issue. How many more excuses will Americans hear from the Republican-controlled Senate before it acts?”
Senate Majority Leader Mike Lee (R-Utah) has also called for extended debate, arguing that Republicans should keep the SAVE America Act on the floor until it passes, even if it requires weeks of discussion.
The legislation would require proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and compel states to remove noncitizens from voter rolls. After the House passed the bill in April 2025 on a bipartisan basis, Roy described it as “a critical step toward strengthening election integrity,” noting that “despite the ridiculous attacks and purposeful misinformation spread about the bill… I am pleased to see that the House of Representatives once again passed the SAVE Act.”
