The Department of Energy has unveiled a new $100 million funding initiative aimed at modernizing and refurbishing the nation’s coal-fired power plants. The program, detailed in a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), seeks to prolong plant operations, enhance efficiency, and bolster the reliability of the U.S. power grid.
This funding follows earlier efforts by the Department of Energy, including a September plan to allocate $625 million for revitalizing the coal industry. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright criticized previous administrations, stating, “For years, the Biden and Obama administrations relentlessly targeted America’s coal industry and workers, leading to the closure of reliable power plants and higher electricity costs.” He credited President [Donald] Trump with ending what he called a “war on American coal” and restoring energy policies prioritizing American interests.
The NOFO encourages projects focused on advanced wastewater management, retrofits enabling coal-to-gas flexibility, and co-firing systems combining coal and natural gas. Selected initiatives will be overseen by the DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory under the Office of Fossil Energy. Applications are due by January 7, 2026.
