President Donald Trump stated on Monday that it was “highly unlikely” he would allocate federal funds to New York City beyond the minimum required if democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani were elected mayor.
Trump asserted in a Truth Social post, “As a Communist, this once great City has ZERO chance of success, or even survival! It can only get worse with a Communist at the helm, and I don’t want to send, as President, good money after bad.” He added, “It is my obligation to run the Nation, and it is my strong conviction that New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win.”
Trump criticized Mamdani’s political record, claiming he was “nothing as an Assemblyman, ranked at the bottom of the class,” and warned against his potential leadership. He also suggested voting for independent candidate Andrew Cuomo or Republican Curtis Sliwa as a strategic choice, stating, “A vote for Curtis Sliwa is a vote for Mamdani.”
Mamdani’s campaign platform includes free city buses, rent freezes, universal childcare, and expanded protections for immigrants, LGBTQ New Yorkers, and small businesses. His momentum has been bolstered by endorsements from progressive figures such as Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Mamdani currently leads in the race ahead of Tuesday’s election, having defeated Cuomo in the June Democratic Party primary.
