President Donald Trump criticized comedian Seth Meyers on social media over the weekend, accusing him of being “the least talented person to ‘perform’ live in the history of television” and calling him “the WORST to perform, live or otherwise.” The remarks came after Meyers joked about Trump’s recent comments on naval aircraft carrier catapults during a “Late Night” segment.
Trump took issue with Meyers’ focus on the topic, writing on Truth Social: “Why does NBC waste its time and money on a guy like this??? – NO TALENT, NO RATINGS, 100% ANTI TRUMP, WHICH IS PROBABLY ILLEGAL!!!” He reiterated his skepticism about the Navy’s electromagnetic catapults, claiming they could fail if exposed to water. “Instead of using hydraulic that can be hit by lightning and it’s fine, you take a little glass of water, you drop it on magnets, I don’t know what’s going to happen,” he said.
Trump announced plans to sign an executive order requiring future aircraft carriers to use steam-powered catapults. Meyers mocked the comments during his “A Closer Look” segment, quipping, “Guy spends more time thinking about catapults than Wile E. Coyote.”
The attack on Meyers follows Trump’s broader criticisms of late-night hosts. Earlier this year, he celebrated CBS’ cancellation of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and praised ABC’s six-day suspension of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in September after Kimmel criticized the Republican response to the killing of conservative leader Charlie Kirk.
Kimmel addressed the backlash in a subsequent monologue, stating, “I don’t think there’s anything funny about it,” and defending his intent to avoid “making light of the murder of a young man.” He later condemned ABC affiliates for removing his show, calling the action “un-American.”
