Senate Republicans must act swiftly to end the filibuster before Democrats potentially take control of the chamber and eliminate it themselves, Sen. Ron Johnson warned on Thursday. The Wisconsin Republican aligned with former President Donald Trump’s stance, claiming Democrats “have no respect for the filibuster” and will abolish it “to acquire and maintain power.”
Johnson emphasized his long-standing support for the filibuster, stating it has “stopped America from going down a socialist path for decades.” However, he conceded that Trump is “100% correct” in urging Republicans to act first. “The Democrats purged the last two senators who held out and supported the filibuster,” Johnson said. “We know they have no respect for it. So we need to strike first.”
He argued that if Republicans move, it should be “for the benefit of the American people,” contrasting with Democratic intentions. “When the Democrats eliminate the filibuster, it’ll all be about their maintenance of power,” he claimed. Johnson added that Republicans could use the change to address border security, election integrity, and legislation, while warning Democrats would “pack the Supreme Court” and push for statehood for Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico if they regain control.
Johnson criticized Democrats for holding “every good piece of legislation hostage” to avoid giving Republicans credit, calling their pursuit of power “sick” and “disgusting.” He also mentioned plans to investigate the Biden Justice Department’s alleged surveillance of Republican lawmakers through “Operation Arctic Frost,” demanding Attorney General Pam Bondi prioritize releasing documents. “This is an order of magnitude worse than Watergate,” he said.
The senator noted he has donated his Senate salary during the shutdown to charities, including The Joseph Project in Milwaukee and React19, which assists those injured by COVID vaccines.
