Sen. Ron Johnson expressed concern over the potential consequences of the government shutdown, stating he hopes planes do not fall from the sky as air traffic controllers resign due to unpaid work. The Wisconsin Republican told Fox’s “Sunday Morning Futures” that Democrats are so extreme they aim to harm the American economy and people by keeping the government closed to deny President Donald Trump credit for improving conditions.
Johnson argued that if the government were open, Republicans could pass legislation benefiting the public. He cited a senior Democratic staffer’s remark that the government would not reopen until “planes start falling out of the sky,” adding, “God, I hope that doesn’t happen.” The senator endorsed Trump’s proposal to eliminate the filibuster, enabling GOP budget passage via a simple Senate majority.
Johnson warned that Democrats would “nuke the filibuster” if they regain power, stating, “If we want to do good things for the American public, we better end the filibuster on our watch.”
