The chair of the Republican National Committee condemned the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York City, accusing Democrats of endorsing a “self-proclaimed communist” who will harm the city. Joe Gruters released a statement following Mamdani’s victory over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, calling his agenda a threat to businesses and taxpayers.
Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, has advocated for policies including rent “socialization,” a wealth tax, municipal control of utilities, reduced police funding, and expanded benefits for undocumented immigrants. Gruters criticized these plans as part of a broader shift toward extremism within the Democratic Party.
Mamdani secured over 50% of the vote in the election, defeating Cuomo with 42% and Republican Curtis Sliwa earning 7%. Gruters warned that voters will hold Democrats accountable for supporting Mamdani’s “far-left agenda” in the 2026 midterms.
