Parents concerned about the increasing presence of LGBTQ themes in children’s programming are alarmed by a new report revealing that such content is widespread across streaming giant Netflix. According to an analysis conducted by Concerned Women for America (CWA), one-third of all shows on Netflix rated for children feature some form of LGBTQ representation, with the figure rising significantly to 41% among TV-G and TV-Y7 programs traditionally considered appropriate for young audiences.
The study, which examined 326 series in these ratings, found that even content aimed at preschoolers includes LGBTQ elements in 21% of cases. CWA’s Penny Nance highlighted shows like “The Magic School Bus Rides Again” as examples featuring characters associated with gender identity concepts previously uncommon for children’s entertainment.
“This trend is not isolated to older youth; over 20% of programming targeted at the youngest viewers incorporates LGBTQ themes,” noted Ms. Nance, who serves as CWA’s CEO. She expressed concern about how far this trend has extended, particularly into content specifically marketed for preschool audiences.
The shift appears substantial enough that it prompted a national conversation last year when a viral clip from “Dead End: Paranormal Park” featuring a transgender main character sparked debate. Researchers noted this example was part of a broader company effort to integrate LGBTQ representation across children’s programming.
Ms. Nance advised parents to scrutinize children’s media more carefully, warning that age ratings no longer reliably shield young audiences from these themes. “The days of just checking the rating and feeling OK about it are over,” she stated, recommending alternative content options for families who prioritize traditional values in their choice of children’s entertainment.
Classic franchises have also been updated with LGBTQ-centric storylines or characters—a phenomenon Nance described as a push toward reflecting what she perceives as a biased view. She emphasized that parents should remain vigilant and seek out streaming services aligned with their family’s media preferences.
