Johnson’s Conference Call Sparks Debate Over Redistricting in Indiana

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., will hold a conference call with Indiana House Republicans this weekend ahead of a special session in the Indiana Statehouse regarding redrawing its congressional maps, two sources confirmed to Politico. Johnson had previously avoided involvement in redistricting, stating it was an issue for individual states to resolve and that he was not involved. The conference call is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 29, at 1 p.m., as reported by Politico. Last week, Johnson contacted Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore Rodric Bray after Bray stated Senate Republicans would not convene to advance new maps, according to Politico. Johnson emphasized the importance of Republicans maintaining their razor-thin majority in the House of Representatives during the 2026 midterm elections. Indiana Republicans plan to redraw the 1st and 7rd congressional delegations to create more GOP-leaning maps, potentially securing additional seats in the House. Following the call, Bray indicated state Republicans would make final decisions on redistricting during their special session on Monday, Dec. 8. Three federal judges ruled that North Carolina’s newly redrawn congressional maps can be used during the 2026 midterm elections, likely giving Republicans an additional House seat as they aim to retain their razor-thin majority. States like Texas and Missouri have redrew maps to benefit Republicans, while California voters approved a proposition that could grant Democrats five additional seats. Virginia and Maryland are considering redrawing their congressional maps, with efforts in Kansas stalling.
