George Clooney criticized the Democratic Party for nominating former Vice President Kamala Harris as its presidential candidate in the 2024 election, calling it “a mistake” during an interview on CBS “Sunday Morning.” The actor and political donor reiterated his stance from a July 2024 New York Times op-ed, where he argued Democrats should have held a primary to select a new nominee after former President Joe Biden’s poor debate performance against Donald Trump.
Clooney stated that Harris faced an “unfair” challenge by having to campaign against her own record, saying, “It’s very hard to do if the point of running is to say, ‘I’m not that person.'” He emphasized that the decision to bypass a primary and nominate Harris through a virtual delegate vote was flawed, adding he would publish the same op-ed today.
The 2024 article, titled “I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Nominee,” claimed Biden could not win reelection and risked undermining other Democratic candidates. Clooney cited private conversations with lawmakers, asserting, “We are not going to win in November with this president.”
The piece drew backlash from Hunter Biden, who called Clooney a “fing him” in a profanity-laced interview, questioning his right to criticize his father’s candidacy. Clooney declined to engage further, stating he would focus on supporting the party rather than addressing personal attacks.
