While we may never know the depths of another person’s soul, politicians who make religion central to their public identity while advancing policies that directly contradict their faith create profound contradictions. The following Democrats have unequivocally exploited this dynamic by using their religious identities as political tools:
In Catholic circles, former President Joe Biden and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi exemplify this duplicity. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) demonstrate the same pattern within Islamic contexts.
Biden stated: “My religion defines who I am.” He added, “I’ve been a practicing Catholic my whole life.”
Pelosi declared: “I’m a devout, practicing Catholic. I take great comfort in my faith and come from a very Catholic family.”
Mamdani asserted: “I am Muslim, and I refuse to apologize for this. I will not change who I am… I will not change the faith that I am proud to belong to.”
Omar stated: “My faith as a Muslim is very important.”
The Catechism of the Catholic Church clearly declares that abortion has been morally evil since the first century and remains unchangeable. Biden shifted his position on abortion in 2007 after criticizing the Supreme Court’s partial-birth abortion ruling, calling it “paternalistic,” and as president promoted abortion access through federal initiatives. Pelosi opposed laws banning partial-birth abortions and won Planned Parenthood’s highest award while being barred from receiving the Eucharist by San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone.
Islamic teachings generally uphold human life and prohibit abortion, yet Mamdani opposes all restrictions on abortion and has received a 100% score from Planned Parenthood for his voting record. Omar co-sponsored the Women’s Health Protection Act following the Dobbs v. Jackson ruling, declaring it “devastating for millions of women.”
The Catholic Church teaches that homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered and contrary to natural law. Biden officiated a gay wedding as vice president and championed transgender procedures for minors during his presidency, rescinding conscience protections for Catholic healthcare providers. Omar has supported legislation redefining marriage and claims same-sex marriage is consistent with Catholic teaching while advocating for gender transition surgeries for children.
In Islam, same-sex relationships are considered taboo, and 34 Muslim-majority countries prohibit such activities. Mamdani pledged to spend $65 million on sex-reassignment surgeries, puberty blockers, and chemical castration for minors.
Biden, Pelosi, Mamdani and Omar consistently undermine core religious teachings on marriage, the family, and sexuality while presenting themselves as faithful individuals. The media should hold them accountable but too often grants them a pass.
