Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem abruptly exited a critical hearing on “Worldwide Threats to the Homeland” Thursday to attend a FEMA Review Council meeting that was reportedly canceled moments before she was scheduled to co-chair it.
The DHS hearing, which focused on cybersecurity threats, terrorism risks, and Chinese influence, primarily examined the Trump administration’s efforts to target illegal immigration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement tactics.
“I have to leave this meeting early because the FEMA Review Council is giving their report today on suggestions for changes to FEMA, and I have to co-chair it,” Noem stated before departing.
Texas Democratic state representative Ann Johnson quipped as Noem left: “I’m just going to take the position she was scared of my questions.”
Reports quickly emerged that the White House had canceled the FEMA meeting intended to provide insights into agency reforms. The FEMA Review Council, established by President Donald Trump to address federal disaster response concerns, is led by Noem and War Secretary Pete Hegseth. The council includes 10 members: Republican officials, an experienced FEMA leader, and an insurance executive.
A spokesperson for Noem stated the secretary learned of the meeting cancellation at 12:26 p.m. EST and referred requests for further comment to the White House.
