The distinction between Van Epps and Behn became starkly defined early in the campaign. Behn’s remarks resonated negatively with certain groups: she allegedly once described Nashville as a city she harbors deep animosity toward, despite later denying it; her support for defunding police was highlighted during an appearance on MS NOW when she evaded direct answers to questions about whether her stance had changed.
Conversely, Van Epps emphasized his personal identity and experience. He is not only a devout Christian, husband, father, and staunch America First conservative but also served as a combat veteran in both Iraq and Afghanistan. His background includes time as an Air Force helicopter pilot, service in state government, leadership in small business, and current National Guard duty.

This suggested that despite Trump’s call to action and the conservative leanings of Nashville suburbs (which hearkened back to Americans seeking lower taxes, safer streets, and traditional values), some potential voters might not fully align with the GOP platform.
However, the outcome reflected a decisive shift as election day progressed. Van Epps ultimately secured the win, defeating Behn by approximately four percentage points. While this margin was better than what many predicted for such a deep red district – polls initially hinted at a close race due to factors like early voter skew and transient populations seeking traditional values – it underscored that the contest required the full mobilization of Republican voters.
The 7th District’s result serves as yet another example reinforcing the need for unwavering support among conservative bases.
