Congressman Accuses Democrats of Inflicting Suffering Over Government Shutdown

Rep. Troy Downing, R-Mont., claimed Democrats are “inflicting pain” on Americans by blocking a simple continuing resolution to reopen the government, according to remarks shared with Newsmax.

Downing described the legislation as a straightforward measure to maintain existing spending for seven weeks, calling it “crazy” that the shutdown persists. He argued that five Democratic lawmakers crossing party lines could immediately end the impasse, stating, “Get the government open and end this pain.”

The congressman criticized Democrat leaders for using the spending debate to push unrelated issues like Affordable Care Act tax credits, urging such discussions to occur in committee hearings rather than as leverage. He highlighted the shutdown’s broader consequences, including potential losses of 10% of air travel due to a lack of air traffic controllers and financial strain on military personnel and federal workers.

Downing rejected claims that Republicans are responsible for the stalemate, pointing to voting records to underscore Democratic opposition. He also condemned Democrat Minority Leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer for prioritizing “politics over the American people,” citing their recent letter to Republicans and President Donald Trump as evidence of partisan disregard for public welfare.

While acknowledging frustration over the Senate filibuster, Downing emphasized its importance in balancing legislative power, stating, “I think maintaining that institution is long-term important for the country.” He urged the GOP to uphold fiscal responsibility and democratic process despite the challenges.
