Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, criticized Chick-fil-A for maintaining its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, arguing the company has strayed from its religious roots.
In a recent interview, Perkins stated that while many major corporations including Coca-Cola are scaling back DEI programs due to political and consumer pushback, Chick-fil-A remains steadfast on policies he described as “woke.”
He noted that this stance is particularly notable given the fast-food chain’s Christian identity and the legacy of its founder, S. Truett Cathy.
Perkins emphasized that Chick-fil-A has “dug in” on these policies despite their faith background, calling it “quite astounding.”
The conservative figure referenced Chick-fil-A’s past high-profile defense of traditional marriage over a decade ago, which led to nationwide boycotts but also strengthened support among conservative consumers.
He argued that the company’s current direction—specifically what he characterized as celebrations of same-sex marriage at some locations—represents a clear departure from those values.
Although Perkins said he does not regret previously supporting Chick-fil-A, he emphasized that the company has “clearly changed.”
He urged consumers who oppose DEI and related social policies to take their business elsewhere, warning that such initiatives could harm companies financially.
“It’s one thing to hold yourself out as a faith-based company,” Perkins said, “but then to embrace values that are counter to that.”
