Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., a member of the progressive “Squad,” is considering a run for the Senate seat held by Ed Markey, D-Mass., according to sources who told Politico. Pressley has been discussing a potential candidacy with allies, though a spokesperson emphasized her focus on addressing the government shutdown and representing her district.

Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., has already announced a primary challenge against Markey, arguing the 79-year-old incumbent should not serve another six years. A recent poll by the University of Massachusetts Amherst showed Markey at 35%, Moulton at 25%, and Pressley at 21% among likely Democratic voters. The survey, with a 6.1% margin of error, was conducted in late October.

Markey, first elected to Congress in 1976, has faced previous challenges, including a 2020 primary where he defeated Joe Kennedy III. Meanwhile, Pressley’s campaign trails financially, with $148,000 in cash on hand compared to Markey’s $2.7 million and Moulton’s $2.1 million. Pressley previously unseated Rep. Mike Capuano, D-Mass., in a 2018 primary.
