Actor Darius McCrary has been transferred from a San Diego jail to Michigan after being detained at a U.S.-Mexico border checkpoint on Oct. 5. The 49-year-old “Family Matters” star faced a felony warrant tied to unpaid child support, according to authorities.
McCrary was arrested while attempting to reenter the U.S. from Tijuana, where border agents discovered an out-of-state warrant linked to his failure to attend a court hearing regarding child support obligations. He was held without bail pending extradition, with prosecutors arguing he posed a flight risk. A court-appointed attorney disputed this, claiming McCrary had traveled to Mexico to assist a nonprofit focused on building homes for homeless individuals.
The judge sided with prosecutors, ordering McCrary’s detention until Michigan authorities could take him into custody. His representative, Ann Barlow, later stated the actor “was not a flight risk” and described the situation as a “mix-up” about meeting his partner for a volunteer program. She emphasized McCrary’s intent to challenge the case in Michigan.
McCrary has faced legal issues for years, including a 2019 divorce settlement requiring $1,366 monthly child support payments. Court documents also mandated he complete alcohol and drug intervention programs. In 2018, his ex-wife alleged he partially dislocated their daughter’s arm during an incident, though McCrary denied wrongdoing, citing the injury as a common “nursemaid’s elbow” case.
The actor remains known for his role as Eddie Winslow on the 1990s sitcom “Family Matters.”
