Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced the creation of a redistricting advisory commission, aiming to pressure lawmakers into revising the state’s congressional maps. The Governor’s Redistricting Advisory Commission, described as historically bipartisan, will conduct public hearings and provide recommendations on redistricting practices.

The current congressional map for Maryland was finalized by the state legislature in 2022, with redistricting typically scheduled for 2032 following the 2030 Census. The commission’s members include Sen. Angela Alsobrooks, a Democrat and close ally of Moore; former Attorney General Brian Frosh, who served under Republican Gov. Larry Hogan; nonpartisan Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss; and Maryland House Speaker Adrienne Jones, a Democrat.

Moore stated in a release, “My commitment has been clear from day one — we will explore every avenue possible to make sure Maryland has fair and representative maps.” He emphasized the commission’s role in ensuring public input, adding, “I thank those who have raised their hands to lead this process, and I am confident in their ability to gather the views and perspectives of a broad range of voices throughout the state.”

The move follows a recent statement by Maryland state Senate President Bill Ferguson, a Democrat, who informed his caucus that the Senate would not pursue mid-cycle redistricting. Ferguson cited risks to Maryland’s political standing amid concerns over the Trump Administration, warning against potential losses to Republicans. Ferguson is listed as an appointee to the commission, though a spokesperson declined to confirm his participation.
