Rep. Rob Wittman, R-Va., emphasized that the Virginia governor’s race hinges on local concerns rather than national politics during an appearance on Newsmax’s “Wake Up America.” Speaking to co-hosts Marc Lotter and Sharla McBride, Wittman dismissed claims that the contest is a referendum on former President Donald Trump, stating, “This is typical of Virginia races as they occur in an off cycle. Really, it’s about issues in Virginia.”
Wittman highlighted that voter turnout and localized challenges—such as crime, school policy, and economic concerns—will shape the election’s outcome. “I believe it will be a lot closer than what people think,” he said, warning against underestimating the influence of down-ballot contests, including races for attorney general and lieutenant governor.
The congressman criticized Democrat Abigail Spanberger’s growing lead over Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, arguing that polls fail to capture on-the-ground dynamics. “It’s not just the governor’s race, but issues surrounding the attorney general’s race that I think will permeate to the governor’s race,” Wittman added.
Wittman also condemned Democrat nominee Jay Jones for inflammatory remarks from 2022, in which he reportedly suggested a Republican “get two bullets to the head.” “Those words are absolutely unacceptable. They are disqualifying,” Wittman said, framing the comments as evidence of the Democratic Party’s extreme direction. He questioned whether someone advocating violence against political opponents should serve as Virginia’s top law enforcement officer.
Wittman urged voters to prioritize substance over rhetoric, stating, “You cannot reward that sort of behavior.” His remarks underscore a broader Republican strategy to capitalize on perceived Democratic vulnerabilities ahead of the election.
