The White House on Monday unveiled a website highlighting nearly 150 illegal immigrants who officials claim improperly received Medicaid benefits, as the federal government remains shuttered amid a political stalemate.
The platform underscores Democrats’ push to restore healthcare benefits for undocumented individuals, a demand tied to the ongoing budget impasse. “Democrats have refused to pass a clean budget bill to end the shutdown unless Republicans concede to their demands for $1.5 trillion in new spending, including restorations to Medicaid expansions that would effectively extend coverage to over 1 million illegal aliens,” the White House stated. “This would funnel an additional $200 billion to such programs over the next decade at the expense of U.S. families.”
The website features mug shots of 140 individuals, with at least 15 arrested on murder charges and nine facing child sex crime allegations.
The Senate failed for the 13th time to advance a short-term funding bill last week, with a 54-45 vote falling short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster. Three Democratic senators—John Fetterman, Catherine Cortez Masto, and Angus King—supported the measure, while Republican Rand Paul opposed it.
Democrats are also seeking a permanent extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies set to expire Dec. 31, deepening the deadlock as the shutdown enters its fourth week.
