Tea Party Patriots Action Honorary Chair Jenny Beth Martin accused Democrats of putting political and partisan interests ahead of the needs of struggling Americans during the government shutdown, particularly regarding Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Speaking on Newsmax’s “Wake Up America Weekend,” Martin criticized the party for focusing on opposing President Donald Trump rather than addressing the crisis.
“The Democrats are very focused on anything they can do to stand up to President [Donald] Trump and the Trump administration, and they think this shutdown is helping them with that,” Martin said. She added, “I think they’re making a huge mistake. They’re the ones who think that government solves problems.”
The Department of Agriculture had planned to withhold SNAP payments starting Saturday until two federal judges ordered the administration to resume them. However, beneficiaries faced uncertainty about when debit cards would be reloaded, causing fear and confusion. U.S. District Judge John J. McConnell, nominated by former President Barack Obama, required the Trump administration to report by Monday on funding SNAP accounts, with a deadline of Wednesday for potential contingency fund use.
Martin also addressed the New York City mayoral race, where Democrat Zohran Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist, has drawn national attention. She argued that Mamdani’s policies would worsen economic challenges in the city, stating, “Having a socialist, Marxist, leftist in control of their city will not help solve their problems. It will only increase prices and costs across the entire city.”
