Government Shutdowns: A Debate on Power and Purpose

If a government shuts down in the forest and nobody useful is affected, should anyone care? A government shutdown mirrors the French approach to strikes. How can you tell? Republicans and Democrats are locked in blame over the 2025 closure of government operations. Bolder and smarter Republicans would claim complete and total credit for such actions.

Republicans must make the case that a government shutdown is beneficial. They need to convince Americans why keeping government open is detrimental. Recall the sitcom “Married, With Children” episode where Peggy Bundy went on strike. She failed because she misunderstood the rules of shutting down work. A person or entity must do something before ceasing it. The thing that stops must have positive value.

A wastrel going on strike benefits society. This highlights policy divides. Liberal Democrats advocate for more and bigger government, while conservative Republicans argue for smaller government that leaves people alone. It is logical for liberals to want expanded government, as power appeals to many politicos.

Democrats often promise to root out waste, fraud, and abuse—yet they are the source of these issues. Liberal waste includes spending billions on climate change initiatives framed as environmentalism. Public schools, under liberal influence, have allegedly dumbed down American children over time. Failed social programs exist primarily to buy votes. Fraud involves funneling money through shell corporations to evade laws. Immigration fraud aids Democrats in importing future voters. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), and Critical Race Theory (CRT) allow unscrupulous individuals to profit by intimidating people.

Government abuse includes weaponizing institutions. Since 2009, the IRS, EPA, and DOJ have targeted Republicans under Democratic presidents. The Biden administration pressured corporations to censor conservative social media content and “debank” accounts held by conservatives. Public schools taught children America is racist and that gender is fluid, leading to declining test scores and patriotism. Under President Barack H. Obama, liberal billionaires funded groups like Antifa, Occupy, Black Lives Matter (BLM), and others using intimidation tactics.

Liberal government abuses escalated from social disorder to violence. When attempts to remove former President Donald Trump from the ballot failed, liberal prosecutors targeted him. Though cases collapsed, the left shifted to hunting conservatives. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., was shot during a congressional baseball game practice. On July 13, 2024 in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump had his ear blown off. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., suffered broken ribs from a neighbor. Conservative youth influencer Charlie Kirk was murdered in Orem, Utah, on September 10 of this year.

When the left gains power, violence erupts, killing innocents. Chicago is a war zone, as big-government Democrats desire. Fear makes people easier to control. A government shutdown allows small businesses to operate without regulatory threats. It halts tax increases, gun bans, and harassment of religious institutions.

True, some benefit from government—receiving money in exchange for voting Democratic. The truth is that firing millions of non-essential workers would improve government. America needs plumbers, electricians, welders, farmers, and others who create value. There are too many paper pushers. The private sector demands results, unlike government, where non-essential workers receive pay regardless of performance.

Government exists for Democrats to secure lifetime employment while Republicans struggle under Democratic rule-makers and breakers. For most Americans, the best government action is to step aside. Social Security checks will still be issued. The military will still be paid. Others in government can find work in the private sector by mastering useful skills. Build something. Produce value. Help society. No society improved by expanding bureaucracy.

The era of Democrats using government as a political slush fund must end. The case for more and bigger government is discredited. America’s big-government expansion has failed. Propping up failure is unacceptable. There are only two paths: drastically shrink government or shut it down permanently.
