Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has condemned President Donald Trump’s decision to appoint Republican Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the United States Special Envoy to Greenland, calling the move “completely unacceptable.”
In a social media statement translated by the platform, Rasmussen stated: “President Trump’s announcement about the appointment of a special envoy to Greenland — and in particular its statements about the purpose hereby — is completely unacceptable. That’s why we are now convening the U.S. ambassador to the Department of State for a discussion.”
He emphasized that “The Danish Kingdom — which consists of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, where I am right now — is sovereign and cannot accept that others question it.”
Trump has repeatedly asserted since 2024 that Greenland’s strategic location and natural resources make it vital to U.S. national security interests, positioning U.S. control over the territory as a long-term priority for Arctic defense and strategic positioning.
Greenland, an autonomous territory within Denmark’s Kingdom, hosted a U.S. delegation in early December to review bilateral connections. The discussions involved potential cooperation “in a number of important areas,” according to Greenland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Science.
