Ralph Norman, the Republican candidate for South Carolina governor, criticized state senators on Wednesday who refused to support redistricting efforts aimed at eliminating the state’s lone Democratic congressional seat.
Five state Senate Republicans joined all Democrats in voting against redrawing the district represented by longtime Rep. Jim Clyburn.
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster is expected to call lawmakers back into a special session later this week to revive a stalled Republican push to redraw the state’s congressional map.
“Redistricting is a prime example of taking a district that should have been redrawn years ago,” Norman, who announced his run for governor in July 2025, said. “I called for it right after I announced my run for governor.”
Norman described Clyburn’s district, South Carolina’s 6th Congressional District, as “a jigsaw puzzle.”
“And it’s not fair to the residents of District 6,” Norman added. “Jim Clyburn offsets every conservative vote of seven congressmen. He votes opposite and cancels out one of our other congressmen.”
“It’s not what the people of South Carolina are about. It’s not conservatism. And it’s wrong.”
