New York Governor Kathy Hochul voiced strong support for the video released by Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani regarding immigration enforcement on Monday, emphasizing the importance of residents knowing their rights.
Hochul stated unequivocally that she has “no problem” with the video. She addressed reporters and assured them, “Everybody in this state should know their rights—not just for themselves or their families, but also for their neighbors and fellow community members.” The governor added, “That’s why I think it’s important for every single person to understand these rights… because they are being ignored.”
The video, posted by Mamdani over the weekend, underscores his commitment to protecting New York City residents from federal immigration actions. In it, Mamdani declared, “we can all stand up to ICE if you know your rights.” He referenced a demonstration last Saturday on Canal Street where more than 150 protesters blocked Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents outside a government garage, preventing them from carrying out an enforcement operation.
Mamdani’s stance aligns closely with the progressive wing of New York City politics. The governor acknowledged their alliance since the election win, noting that Hochul has shifted her position in recent weeks to support Mamdani following his victory in the mayoral contest last month.
Despite months of campaigning against tax increases, including a promise not to raise personal income taxes, Hochul now appears open to increasing corporate taxes. This move could provide funding for Mamdani’s proposed city initiatives, such as free public transit through fare-free buses.
